Introduction Nob Hill, the highest hill in downtown San Francisco, is the most aristocratic area in the city. "Nob" is a word from the Hindustani language during the colonial era, meaning "tycoon" or "influential person." In fact, when the first cable car reached this hillside in 1878, two tycoons who had made fortunes in the Gold Rush and four magnates who had struck it rich from the Pacific Railway built magnificent mansions on the hill. These grand homes were destroyed in the devastating earthquake of 1906. Today, they have been replaced by luxury hotels and beautiful churches, and the area remains an upscale residential district where many members of high society live. It has now become a hub for the wealthy.

Transportation California Street Cable Cars run along the key streets of Nob Hill, and Bus Route 1 also passes through the area, making transportation very convenient.
