Guide  In New York, one naturally thinks of the financier John D. Rockefeller Jr. In the late 1920s, despite the economic depression clouding North and South America, he decided to pursue a long-held grand vision: to build a complex of buildings in the heart of Manhattan that would become a classic entertainment hub.     Highlights  From October to April of the following year, the plaza becomes an ice-skating rink; during the warmer months, it transforms into a summer garden, with an 18-foot-tall bronze statue of Prometheus at its center, adorned with golden petals atop the figure’s head — competing with the city’s most beautiful sculptures. Of course, the most eye-catching feature of the center is the 70-story Rockefeller Plaza skyscraper. This complex of buildings is situated between Fifth and Sixth Avenues, stretching from 47th to 51st Streets. The entertainment hub includes Radio City Music Hall, where world-class artists perform. NBC and various television network programs are broadcast from studios here.     Introduction  Rockefeller Center is a complex of nineteen buildings covering twenty-two acres (89,029.6 square meters). Most national television broadcasting bases are located here, as well as the headquarters of many international companies. Underground shops and restaurants connect the various buildings. The lower plaza is a striking urban oasis, adorned with the 159 colorful flags of the United Nations.
