Highlights　　The most prominent feature of the square is the Marble Arch. Originally built in 1889 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the inauguration of George Washington, the founding father of the United States, it was replaced in 1892 by the Marble Arch designed by Stanford White. There is a hidden staircase on the right side of the arch that leads to the top. Additionally, there are statues of Washington on both sides of the arch—the one on the right represents Washington in peacetime, and the one on the left depicts him in wartime. These were added in 1918 and 1916, respectively.
