Guide    In the 1960s, a generation of artistic rebels carved out their territory in SoHo, Lower Manhattan: transforming abandoned factory spaces into combined dwellings and creative sanctuaries, merging artistic endeavor with everyday living. There were none of the cold glass facades of uptown, no fractured skies, no elitist formalities or pretensions. What they had was freedom, openness, and the liberty to do as they pleased. As a paradise for these artistic rebels, SoHo enjoyed about two to three decades of flourishing. Then, commerce arrived unexpectedly, and art stepped down from its former stage. Today, SoHo has become a cultural and commercial district. Introduction    SOHO is an acronym for SOUTH OF HOUSTON, referring to the area south of Houston Street in Lower Manhattan. SoHo is not an independent neighborhood but is grouped together with the West Village, Greenwich Village, and Little Italy to form the Second District of Manhattan Island. Today’s SoHo is a commercial hub, home to nearly 600 unique stores selling apparel, accessories, and more. Taking Broadway in central SoHo as an example, there are over 50 specialty shops offering a range of merchandise including jewelry, clothing, cosmetics, home goods, stationery, and general merchandise. There are also more than 100 restaurants, covering global cuisines and high-end themed dining. World-renowned brands such as PRADA, CHANEL, and LOUIS VUITTON have long established a presence in this prime commercial district.
