Introduction Some of America’s most outstanding talents were brought together to build this most magnificent building in the United States — including McKim, Mead and White, painter John Singer Sargent, and sculptor Bela Pratt, among others. Completed in 1895, the library truly lives up to its title as the “palace for the people.” Although some of its original glory has faded, the Boston Public Library remains a model of luxurious civic architecture.
