The Bunker Hill Monument was built to commemorate a historic battle. Bunker Hill is one of the most famous battlefields in American Revolutionary history. In June 1775, the Continental Army, commanded by Colonel William Prescott, was ordered to occupy Bunker Hill. The Continental soldiers first took nearby Breed's Hill, which held a strategic position overlooking Boston. The British launched two fierce assaults to retake the hill but were repelled by the Continental Army, resulting in over 1,000 British casualties. However, during a third attack, the exhausted and ammunition-depleted Continental troops were forced to retreat. This intense battle significantly raised the profile of the Continental Army’s fighting capability. It was also around this time that George Washington was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army.
