Lincoln Memorial

Introduction Built in honor of U.S. President Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln made great contributions to the emancipation of enslaved African Americans and was assassinated on April 14, 1865. The memorial's construction began in 1914 and was completed in 1922. It is a neoclassical structure modeled after the ancient Greek Parthenon, measuring 118 feet in length from east to west, 188 feet in width from north to south, and 80 feet in height. It is supported by 36 plain white marble columns. At the center of the memorial stands a 19-foot-tall seated statue of Lincoln. The left wall of the statue bears an engraving of Lincoln’s second inaugural address, while the stone wall behind it features five large words: “In this temple, as in the hearts of the people for whom he saved the Union, the memory of Abraham Lincoln is enshrined forever.” Transport: Take the Orange/Blue Metro line to Foggy Bottom-GWU Station, then walk for 30 minutes or take the tour bus.
