The elevator takes you straight to the top in 70 seconds, with the Mall spread out beneath your feet. Same-day, time-specific tickets for the observation deck are handed out at the kiosk on 15th Street/Madison Drive NW from 8am, or can be reserved online for a small fee. Introduction

The Washington Monument was built to honor George Washington, the first President of the United States. Construction began in 1848 and was not completed until 1884. Located in the heart of Washington, D.C., it stands on the axis between the U.S. Capitol and the Lincoln Memorial. This 169-meter-tall marble obelisk is inlaid with 188 commemorative stones donated by individuals, organizations, and governments from around the world. One of them, inscribed in Chinese, was a gift from the Qing government. The monument is surrounded by lush green lawns, which often host events and celebrations. Inside, there are 50 flights of iron stairs as well as a high-speed elevator that reaches the top in 70 seconds. From the observation deck, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia.
