Great Smoky Mountains National Park, also known as the Great Smokies, is located on the border of Tennessee and North Carolina. With approximately ten million visitors each year, it is the most visited national park in the United States. Covering an area of 200,000 hectares, the park remains largely untouched by human development, offering a relatively favorable environment for plant life and preserving some of the best-preserved temperate deciduous forests in the world. It is home to 3,500 species of native plants and many endangered animals, and notably hosts the largest population of salamanders in the world.
