Kasthamandap Temple

Introduction Kasthamandap Temple is located at the southwest corner of the square, and the name of Kathmandu is derived from it. Although there are no exact historical records, Kasthamandap was likely built in the 12th century. It is said that all the timber used in the structure came from a single tree. Initially, it served as a gathering place for people attending important ceremonies and festivals. Later, it became a temple dedicated to the god Gorakhnath. A statue of Gorakhnath is enshrined in the small wooden house at the center of the temple, while statues of Ganesh can be found throughout the courtyard, along with shrines to other deities. Bronze lions guard the entrance, and symbolic Hindu motifs are depicted on the first floor of this three-story building. Each morning, as porters sit in front of the temple soliciting customers, this square-shaped, medieval-style structure comes alive with activity.
