A powerful earthquake devastates Nepal's landmarks as Bhimsen Tower collapses

A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck Nepal on April 25, causing severe damage to local residents and cultural heritage. More than 2,430 people have been confirmed dead. The famous nine-story tourist attraction, Bhimsen Tower, also collapsed due to the quake. The tremor was so strong that it was felt in neighboring countries including India, Bangladesh, Tibet in China, and Pakistan. A massive avalanche was also triggered at the base camp of Mount Everest, the world’s highest peak.

The most shocking collapse during this earthquake was the historic “Dharahara Tower” (also known as Bhimsen Tower), a well-known tourist attraction in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. Standing 60 meters tall with nine stories, Dharahara was commissioned by the queen in 1832 and is also referred to as Bhimsen Tower. It is a major attraction in the historic Durbar Square of Kathmandu, where many kings were crowned throughout history. Rich in historical significance, visitors could once climb up its narrow spiral staircase to a viewing platform approximately 200 feet high to enjoy panoramic views of the Kathmandu Valley before the tower collapsed.
