A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck Nepal on April 25, causing severe damage to local residents and cultural heritage. Over 2,430 people have been confirmed dead, and the famous nine-story tourist attraction, Bhimsen Tower, also collapsed. The quake was so powerful that it was felt in neighboring countries including India, Bangladesh, Tibet in China, and Pakistan. A massive avalanche was also triggered at the base camp of Mount Everest, the world’s highest peak.

The most shocking collapse in this powerful earthquake was the well-known tourist attraction in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal — “Dharahara Tower” (also known as Bhimsen Tower). Standing 60 meters tall with nine stories, Dharahara was built in 1832 by order of the queen and is also referred to as Bhimsen Tower. It is a major attraction in Kathmandu’s historic Durbar Square and has significant historical importance as past kings were crowned here. Before its collapse, visitors could climb up narrow spiral stairs to a viewing platform about 200 feet high, offering panoramic views of the Kathmandu Valley.
