From the lofty mountain pass, gaze out at the Sichuan-Tibet Highway and Lancang River as two shimmering ribbons appearing and disappearing among countless valleys and ridges. Climb over Dongda Mountain, over 5,008m in altitude, and arrive at Zuogong.     Day 6: Zuogong — Ranwu (291KM) | April 17 | Accommodation: Ranwu Depart from Zuogong to Bangda. At an altitude of 4,400m, Bangda is the junction of the Sichuan-Tibet South and North Routes, leading north to Chamdo and west to Nyingchi and Lhasa — an important transportation hub. Leave the grassland and climb over the greatest natural barrier of the Hengduan Mountains — Yela Mountain, with the pass at 4,839m. Descend via the famous Ninety-Nine Turns to the Nujiang River and arrive in Baxoi. Baxoi means “village at the foot of the brave man’s mountain” in Tibetan, at an altitude of 3,910m. Along the way, enjoy a spectacular mix of snow-capped mountains, primeval forests, and pastoral scenery. Continue on to Ranwu Valley, where in spring you can admire the year-round, oddly-shaped giant icefalls and glaciers. Drive through ice crevices for an exhilarating yet safe experience. Finally, arrive in Ranwu Town. Get up early to enjoy Ranwu Lake — a famous highland glacial lake, 22 square kilometers in size, at an altitude of 3,850m. It is divided into upper and lower sections.
Day 7: Ranwu – Midui Glacier – Ranwu – Bomi (129KM) | April 18 | Accommodation: Bomi This area is the source of the Parlung Tsangpo River, the largest tributary of the Yarlung Tsangpo River. Driving here, you’ll see lush grasslands nearby, thriving barley and rapeseed fields, dense forests on the lakeside hillsides, colorful rhododendrons and shrubs higher up, and crystal-clear blue lake water reflecting the forests. The lake surface is calm and mirror-like, with glistening glaciers and snow-capped mountains nearby. After lunch, drive out of Ranwu Town and onto the most beautiful section of the Sichuan-Tibet Highway. Lush woods and babbling streams create one natural painting after another, truly enchanting. Follow the Parlung Tsangpo River downstream to Bomi, known as the “Switzerland of Tibet.”

Day 8: Bomi — Bayi (235KM) | April 19 | Accommodation: Bayi Set off early, driving through primeval forests toward the last major challenge on the Sichuan-Tibet Highway — Tongmai. The 15km stretch from Tongmai to Palong is full of snowy mountains and rivers, with loose and fragile mountain rock that is highly prone to landslides and mudslides during rain, wind, or snowmelt. Completing this most treacherous section of the world’s most dangerous road brings a great sense of relief. After the challenge, the road improves. Approaching Nyingchi, dense forests block out the sky, offering serene bird songs and fragrant blossoms. Pass through the forest-filled Nyingchi, climb over the misty, 4,702m-high Sejila Mountain, and gaze at the famed Namcha Barwa Peak — instantly feeling uplifted. After descending Sejila Mountain, drive downhill all the way to the lower valley of the Nyang River in Nyingchi County, then continue 19km to Bayi Town, the capital of Nyingchi Prefecture, at an altitude of 2,400m, known as the “Jiangnan of Tibet.” Along the way, you can admire the “King of Banyans” in Bajie Township, 4km from Bayi Town.
Day 9: Bayi — Lhasa (497KM) | April 20 | Accommodation: Lhasa Depart from Bayi Town and enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Nyang River along the way. After passing Gongbo’gyamda, continue for 44km at the fork at the Bashu Bridge on the Nyang River tributary to reach Basongco, the sacred lake of the Red Sect. Surrounded by mountains, the lake is like a crescent moon embedded between high valleys, with emerald-green, transparent waters reflecting snow-capped peaks. Wildflowers bloom along the shore, ducks, sandpipers, and cranes play on the lake, fish compete for food, and small boats drift on the water. On the lake’s islet, the chanting from Cuozong Gongba Monastery seems to cleanse worldly troubles. Basongco, also called Cuogao Lake, means “Green Water” in Tibetan, at an altitude of over 3,500m and covering 27 square kilometers. Return to the Sichuan-Tibet Highway, climb over Mila Mountain, and follow the Lhasa River Valley. After passing Dazi County, you can see the majestic Potala Palace on Red Hill in the distance, arriving at the long-dreamed-of holy city of Lhasa.
