Introduction This unique Buddhist temple is located to the north of the Palace Square. Legend has it that the temple was built in the 12th century, but in fact, its earliest record dates back to 1409. As you walk through the corridor adorned with lion statues, it’s hard to imagine that the interior structure is so magnificent. This massive square-shaped temple has three-tiered roofs, with its exterior surfaces covered in copper. The shrine inside houses statues of Sakyamuni Buddha and Guanyin Bodhisattva. The first floor features statues of Sakyamuni Buddha in various expressions, as well as exquisite murals. The life story of the Buddha is depicted on the front part of the main shrine. The inner courtyard is surrounded by railings on three sides, with passageways alongside. To leave the passageway and enter the center of the inner courtyard, you must remove your shoes and all leather items. At the center of the inner courtyard stands a small, delicate temple with an elaborately decorated golden spire shaped like a copper bell. The Golden Temple was funded by a businessman from Patan, who amassed great wealth through years of trade with Tibet. Ticket / Opening Hours Entrance fee: 25 rupees.
