Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnamese: Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh) is located in the Mekong Delta region. As a municipality directly under the central government of Vietnam, it is the largest city in the country and one of Vietnam’s five centrally governed municipalities. It was also the capital of the former Republic of Vietnam. On April 30, 1975, after the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam) unified the entire country, in honor of Hồ Chí Minh, the principal founder of modern Vietnam, the city formerly known as Saigon was renamed “Ho Chi Minh City.”

Ho Chi Minh City is a picturesque city, where the beautiful Saigon River winds around it, offering enchanting scenery. Taking a boat cruise along the Saigon River to admire the views on both banks is a unique experience. Notable attractions in the city include Quốc Tự Temple, Lái Thiêu Pagoda, Vĩnh Nghiêm Pagoda, Thiên Hậu Temple, Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica of Saigon, Suối Tiên Park, Botanical Garden, and Sài Gòn Zoo and Botanical Gardens. The Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica of Saigon, located in District 1, was built by the French and features a distinctive design reminiscent of Paris’s Notre-Dame Cathedral in France. It is the largest Catholic cathedral in Ho Chi Minh City, with a choir and capacity for hundreds of worshippers. Upon arriving in Ho Chi Minh City, you also have the opportunity to explore various buildings that exhibit either French or American architectural styles, or that hold historical significance.
