Saigon Opera House

The Saigon Opera House, also known as the Hồ Chí Minh City Opera House, with "Saigon" being the former name of what is now Ho Chi Minh City. It is a theater located in District 1, in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City, and is one of the city's historical and cultural heritage sites. Other notable landmarks in the area include Notre-Dame Cathedral, the City Hall, and the Central Post Office. These magnificent French-style historic buildings are like glittering pearls inlaid on the beautiful map of old Saigon, accentuating the city’s ancient charm and civilization even more brilliantly.

The Saigon Opera House is a prime example of classic Gothic architecture and serves as a multifunctional venue for artistic performances. Both its interior decorations and exterior reliefs were designed in the style of late 19th-century French theaters. The opera house was built in 1898 and completed in 1900, boasting a history of over a hundred years. Its exterior is exquisitely adorned with a variety of reliefs and patterns. At the top of the grand central arch on the facade stand two winged cherubs holding a lyre, while at the base of the arch, two goddesses flank the columns, seemingly lifting the gate with their hands. The imaginative design highlights the romantic essence of French style. During the Vietnam War, the building served as the lower house of the Republic of Vietnam’s National Assembly. In 1975, when North Vietnamese communist forces captured Saigon and the country was reunified, the building resumed its role as a cultural and artistic facility.
