Nihondaira

Nihondaira is a hilly area located between Shimizu Ward and Suruga Ward in Shizuoka City, Shizuoka Prefecture, at an elevation of 308 meters. It is a prefectural nature park designated by Shizuoka Prefecture and was ranked first in the 1980 Japan’s 100 Best Tourist Sites. Facing the Izu Peninsula across Suruga Bay, it offers panoramic views of majestic sights such as Mount Fuji, the Izu Peninsula, the Southern Alps, Shizuoka City, Shimizu Port, and Suruga Bay, making it a nationally designated Place of Scenic Beauty in Japan.

As a tourist attraction, Nihondaira is not only beautiful in itself but also because it is surrounded by several renowned sightseeing spots in Japan. These sites are often combined into premium travel routes offered by major tour operators. For example, Kuno Shrine is just a 1,065-meter cable car ride away from Nihondaira — visitors can travel between the two spots in just five minutes. Kuno Shrine enshrines Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate. The shrine is surrounded by ancient trees and features exquisitely carved buildings, giving it a solemn and elegant atmosphere. It is designated by the Japanese government as an Important Cultural Property. In addition to the shrine, the area around Nihondaira also includes vast plum gardens, tea plantations, and orange orchards, where visitors can enjoy picking oranges, strawberries, and tea leaves while touring the farms.
