The Maple Leaf Festival Kicks Off as Izu Peninsula in Shizuoka Turns Crimson

If you’re looking for the most poetic spot on the Izu Peninsula, Shuzenji is undoubtedly the top choice. Discovered by the monk Kūkai (also known as Kōbō Daishi), Shuzenji is a quaint mountain hot spring town with a long history. The area is filled with old-fashioned single-story buildings, lush green trees, and dense bamboo groves. Occasionally, you might spot a rickshaw puller passing by, giving you the fleeting illusion of traveling back in time to the Heian period. When visiting Shuzenji, opt for a charming, small-scale hot spring inn to soak in history, then explore the surrounding modern theme parks for a delightful blend of old and new. Aside from Shuzenji itself, where some maple leaves are already visible, the Shuzenji Onsen Street is gradually being tinged with crimson.
