Hawaii Surf Triple Crown: Laniakea Pro Kicks Off the Competition

The annual surf season is back in full swing. Today (the 12th), the opening ceremony of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing — a million-dollar event hosted by Vitaminwater in Honolulu — took place. The first leg of the Triple Crown, the Laniakea Pro competition, will take place at Haleiwa Aliʻi Beach Park over the most surfable four days between November 12 and November 24.

This winter, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Triple Crown, the champion will receive a commemorative prize package along with a $100,000 cash bonus. In addition to individual events and the overall title, the final event — the Pipe Masters — will determine this year’s ASP World Champion. Over the six-week Triple Crown season, the surfer who puts on the best aerial performance for the Hawaiian Airshow will earn 250,000 HawaiianMiles. Randy Rarick, CEO of the Triple Crown, said that regardless of wave size in Haleiwa, the wave height is ideal for showcasing aerial moves, making it the perfect stage for the 2012 Hawaiian Airshow. The Hawaiian Airshow will feature a display of skilled and cutting-edge airshow teams, led by top athletes such as John Florence from Hawaii, Dane Reynolds from California, Gabriel Medina from Brazil, Josh Kerr from Australia, and last year’s airshow winner Nat Young from California.

In addition to the first week’s Triple Crown events, other activities include storytelling sessions at the Surfing Restaurant on November 14, with classic film screenings at 1 PM, 2 PM, and 8 PM; and the John Kelly Surfrider Award Ceremony at Waimea Valley on November 17.
