Amagi Pass

Amagi Pass is located at the border between Itoshima City in Fukuoka Prefecture and Kawazu Town in Tagata District, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. At an elevation of 820 meters, it is a famous sightseeing destination in the area. Beneath the pass lies the Amagi Tunnel, which gained renown as the setting of Nobel Prize-winning author Yasunari Kawabata’s short story “The Izu Dancer.” In 1970, with the opening of the New Amagi Tunnel, the old one gradually became a walking path for visitors and was designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.

The tranquil Amagi Pass is best known for its hot spring inns and scenic spots such as the Reisen Falls. Among them, the Yunotsu Onsen, where the Kano River meets the Nekogawa River, is world-renowned for its serene and elegant atmosphere, and was frequently visited by literati such as Yasunari Kawabata. Reisen Falls is one of the most famous waterfalls on the Izu Peninsula, consisting of seven cascades: Kamitsuru, Eritsuru, Hebitsuru, Ushojingutsuru, Kanetsuru, Deaitsuturu, and Otakutsuru, hence also known as the Seven Waterfalls of Kawazu. The largest of the seven is the Otakutsuru Falls, standing 30 meters high and 7 meters wide. It is particularly spectacular during the rainy season, resembling a grand waterfall curtain hanging in the mountains, with the sound of rushing water echoing through the pass, adding much charm to the landscape.

In addition to its beautiful scenery, Amagi Pass is also a renowned production area for Japanese horseradish (wasabi) in Japan. Wasabi products are among the best local specialties, and travelers often bring some back for family and friends.
