Originally called Sakashima, Mikimoto Pearl Island is located in the bay of Toba City, Mie Prefecture, Japan, and is the birthplace of Mikimoto pearls. In 1893, Kokichi Mikimoto successfully cultivated the world’s first cultured pearls on this small island, marking one of Japan’s proudest inventions. Today, the entire island is under the management of Mikimoto Pearl Museum Co., Ltd.
