Matsusaka City

Matsusaka City, formerly known as "Matsuzaka," is a city located in the central part of Mie Prefecture, Japan, facing Ise Bay. It enjoys a relatively warm climate and is renowned as the birthplace of Matsusaka beef. During the Edo period, the city was famous for its Ise merchants and served as a commercial hub. It remains one of the economic centers of Mie Prefecture and is also the birthplace of singer Nishino Kana.

The most historically significant site in Matsusaka City is Matsusaka Castle. The castle ruins feature a renkaku-style hirayama (flatland hilltop) layout, with the Sakanoi River flowing along the northern edge, serving as a natural moat. In the early Edo period, it was the site of the Matsusaka Domain’s government office. Other notable sites to visit include the Matsusaka Castle Ruins, Takanawa Kofun, Okouchi Castle Ruins, Motoori Norinaga Memorial Museum, the Birthplace of the Mitsui Family, Matsura Takeshirō Memorial Museum, and the Matsusaka City Historical and Folklore Museum.
