Atsuta Shrine

Atsuta Shrine is located in the Atsuta district of Nagoya, covering an area of 200,000 square meters. It is one of Japan's three great shrines and the most famous historical site in Aichi Prefecture.

Historical records state that in the 43rd year of Emperor Keikō’s reign, Yamato Takeru (also known as Prince Ousu) died, and his wife, Miyasuhime, preserved his relics and enshrined the Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi sword he once wielded in their family shrine. Soon after (the Nihon Shoki records this event as occurring in the 51st year of Emperor Keikō’s reign), these relics and the sacred sword were moved to the current site of Atsuta Shrine. Constructed in the Shinmei-zukuri architectural style, the shrine houses many cultural properties designated as national treasures. The main hall enshrines five deities: Yamato Takeru, Miyasuhime, Amaterasu, Susanoo-no-Mikoto, and Ame-no-Koyane-no-Mikoto. Highly revered throughout Japanese history, the shrine also commands great respect among the general public, making it one of the most spiritually significant sites in the country.

Surrounded by ancient trees and enveloped in a serene and solemn atmosphere, Atsuta Shrine is often referred to as the "Forest of Atsuta." The shrine hosts ceremonies and festivals almost all year round. Many couples also choose to hold their wedding ceremonies here to pray for divine blessings, contributing to the vibrant and lively ambiance throughout the year. As one of Nagoya’s must-see attractions, Atsuta Shrine welcomes approximately 9 million visitors annually.
