Yokohama Chinatown is a Chinese residential area located in Yamashita-cho, Naka Ward, Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. It is said to have formed after the opening of Yokohama Port in 1859, when many Chinese people from Guangdong, Shanghai, and other regions migrated here to engage in trade, leading to continuous prosperity and development. It is the largest Chinatown in Japan and even Asia, and is collectively known as one of Japan’s Three Great Chinatowns along with Kobe’s Nankinmachi and Nagasaki’s Shinchi Chinatown.

With a long history of 140 years, Yokohama Chinatown is densely packed with over 600 Chinese restaurants, grocery stores, and other shops. In terms of the number of establishments, it is the largest Chinatown in the world. Strolling through Yokohama Chinatown, visitors can enjoy authentic Cantonese, Shanghai, Sichuan, Beijing, and other well-known Chinese cuisines. Most of the staff working here are Chinese, and Chinese conversations can often be heard in the shops, creating a vibrant Chinese atmosphere. In addition to Chinese food, goods, accessories, and clothing, Yokohama Chinatown is also beautifully decorated with dazzling neon lights during the Spring Festival (Lunar New Year) in February, where enthusiastic performers present traditional Chinese acts such as lion and dragon dances, filling the area with festive Lunar New Year cheer.
