A 63,000-square-meter island amusement park—Yokohama Hakkeijima from Japan—comes to Taiwan

The renowned Yokohama Hakkeijima Aquarium in Japan is set to establish a presence in Taiwan. On the 28th, Taoyuan Mayor Cheng Wen-tsan attended the “Signing Press Conference for the Investment in an Aquarium by Yokohama Hakkeijima Co., Ltd. of Japan and Cathay Life Insurance,” marking the future arrival of an unprecedented aquarium in Taoyuan, which broke ground in 2017 and began operations in early 2020.

This time, the Taoyuan City Government has made good use of private sector resources and fostered public-private cooperation. Taking the industrial zone near Taoyuan HSR Station as an example, it includes private investments such as the Hua Tai Duty-Free Mall, a cinema, an aquarium, commercial office buildings, and tourist hotels. The transnational aquarium development project signed today covers a site area of 21 hectares, with a total investment of 20 billion NTD, providing Taoyuan residents with a higher-quality leisure and entertainment space.

This aquarium development project is the first major overseas investment by Yokohama Hakkeijima Co., Ltd. It is hoped that the company will apply its successful experience in Japan to the Taoyuan aquarium project, combining digital technology with the design of an urban-style aquarium to create a successful model for urban development.
