Japan’s renowned Yokohama Hakkeijima Aquarium will be established in Taiwan. On the 28th, Taoyuan Mayor Cheng Wen-tsan attended the “Signing Press Conference of the Investment in an Aquarium by Yokohama Hakkeijima Co., Ltd. of Japan and Cathay Life Insurance.” In the future, Taoyuan will have an unprecedented aquarium, which broke ground in 2017 and is set to begin operations in early 2020.

This time, the Taoyuan City Government has made good use of private sector strength and combined public-private cooperation. For example, the industrial zone near the Taoyuan High-Speed Rail Station includes private investments such as the Huatai Luxury Outlet Mall, a cinema, an aquarium, business office buildings, and tourist hotels. The cross-border aquarium development project signed today covers a site area of 21 hectares, with a total investment of 20 billion NTD, providing Taoyuan citizens with a higher-quality leisure and entertainment space.

This aquarium development project is Yokohama Hakkeijima Company’s first major overseas investment. It is hoped that Yokohama Hakkeijima Company will apply Japan’s successful experience to the Taoyuan aquarium project, integrating digital technology and a city-type aquarium design to become a model for successful urban development.
