Sanshi-en

Sanshi-en is a Japanese garden facing Tokyo Bay, located in the renowned city of Yokohama in the Kanto region. Covering an area of approximately 175,000 square meters. It was built by Japanese silk magnate Enjiro Hara in 1902 and took 20 years to complete. It is one of Japan’s most famous landscape gardens and also one of the most popular sightseeing spots in Yokohama.

Sanshi-en features numerous traditional Japanese structures such as the Hokufuan, Tōkei-ji, Buddha Hall, Shōfūkaku, Kishunkaku, Gekkakaku, Chōshūkaku, and Tōshadō. Most of these important historical buildings were relocated from various parts of Japan and hold significant artistic and historical research value. The garden is lush with greenery and alive with birdsong and floral scents throughout the seasons, blending harmoniously with the classic historic architecture. This creates a perfect showcase of Japanese garden design art and makes it a favored gathering place for artists and writers.

Sanshi-en is filled with cherry blossom trees. In spring, various cherry blossoms bloom vibrantly, their branches bursting with cascades of pink, like clouds or rosy mist, heralding the arrival of spring to the people of Yokohama. It is a well-known cherry blossom viewing spot in Japan. Additionally, Sanshi-en is a favorite wedding venue for many young couples. Weekends often see numerous weddings taking place here, earning it the reputation of a “lover’s sanctuary.”
