Yokohama Port Museum

The Yokohama Port Museum is located in Nishi Ward, Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. It first opened in 1989 and was Japan’s first museum dedicated to the theme of Yokohama Port. Situated within the “Nippon Maru Memorial Park” in the highly modern Minato Mirai 21 area of Yokohama, it was originally named the Yokohama Maritime Museum. In April 2009, to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Yokohama’s port opening, it was transformed into the Yokohama Port Museum.

Focusing on ports and ships, the Yokohama Port Museum features five permanent exhibition areas: “The Sail Training Ship Nippon Maru,” “Traces of Yokohama Port,” “The Charms of Yokohama Port,” “Evolution of Ships,” and “World Ports.” Each section includes models. Among the five permanent exhibits, the Sail Training Ship Nippon Maru is especially eye-catching. Built in 1930, the Nippon Maru was a training sailing ship for the Merchant Marine School, used to train sailors until it was decommissioned in 1984. Over its 54 years of service, the ship successfully trained 11,500 students. Starting in 1985, the Nippon Maru has been preserved and displayed at the Yokohama Port Museum just as it was during its service years and remains open to the public. It attracts many visitors every day.
