Yungang National Forest Park is a national-level forest park.

Yungang National Forest Park is among the first 41 national forest parks approved by China’s former Ministry of Forestry. Located in Datong City, Shanxi Province, it spans 15,967 hectares with about 31% forest coverage. The park features a diverse range of natural and cultural attractions, such as the globally acclaimed Yungang Grottoes from the Northern Wei Dynasty; the ancient battlefield of the "Battle of Baideng" from the Western Han Dynasty, recorded in history books; the scenic beauty of Wenyang Lake with its clear blue waters; the striking red cliffs and lush pines of Hongshiya; ancient plant fossil remains; and modern coal industry exhibitions. Together with Datong's Shanghua and Xiaohua Temples, Shanhua Temple, Nine-Dragon Screen, as well as nearby attractions like the Wooden Pagoda in Ying County and Hanging Temple at Mount Heng, they form a unique destination where natural landscapes and historic sites complement each other, showcasing rich cultural heritage and diverse regional characteristics.

Datong is a renowned historical and cultural city that once served as the “Capital of Three Dynasties” (early capital of the Northern Wei, secondary capital during the Liao and Jin Dynasties) and a “Strategic City of Two Dynasties” (Ming and Qing). Historically located at the crossroads of the Central Plains Han Chinese regimes and northern ethnic minority governments, people of different ethnicities lived and worked together here for generations, engaging in economic and cultural exchanges that mutually influenced and blended their traditions. This fusion created distinctive artistic and cultural features, along with rich customs, leaving behind a wealth of historical documents and numerous scenic and historic sites. These treasures form an important part of China’s cultural heritage.
