Datong District was Taipei’s earliest economic and trade hub, as well as a cradle for new ideas. It boasts abundant cultural heritage sites. With the historical ambiance exuded by its old buildings, the lifestyle around temples, and budding creative shops, its Dadaocheng area has deep cultural roots and a century-old charm. Yongle Market. (Photo / Scenic Spots Home Editorial Department)
Located next to the Xia Hai City God Temple, Yongle Market was established during the Japanese colonial period (1907) and was not renovated into a comprehensive shopping mall building until 1982. In addition to well-known snacks, the second and third floors house hundreds of fabric merchants and suppliers. Not only do they offer a wide variety of fabrics and patterns, but you can also enjoy wholesale prices. Most uniquely, there are master tailors on-site who can custom-fit clothes for you.

In addition to selling the nostalgic zhizai popsicles from childhood, the shop also offers deliciously soft lemon slushies, ice cream, and miancha, all filled with a sense of Taiwanese nostalgia. From the outside, the store looks like an ordinary shop, but once you step inside, you’ll find a quaint and cozy interior with a vintage and hipster vibe.

Dadaocheng Wharf is a great spot to relax and enjoy the breeze. (Photo / Scenic Spots Home Sarah)
The riverside wharf of Dadaocheng has long been a popular photography spot. The container market set up in the special zone brings a different exotic feel to Dadaocheng. Unfortunately, our schedule that day was in the afternoon, so the container market hadn’t started operating yet. But taking a stroll along the riverbank, enjoying the breeze, and quietly sitting by the river to admire the scenery was truly relaxing.

Dadaocheng Cisheng Temple front courtyard. (Photo / Taipei City - )
Commonly known as Dadaocheng Mazu Temple, Cisheng Temple enshrines the Heavenly Holy Mother, the guardian deity of sailors. Originally built in 1866 (the fifth year of the Tongzhi reign) at the intersection of today’s Xining North Road and Minsheng West Road, the temple was demolished in 1910 due to urban redevelopment by Japanese authorities. Local people from Tong’an raised funds to relocate it to its current site on Yanping North Road and rebuilt the temple using the original beams, columns, and stones. The reconstruction was completed in 1914. Classic snacks in front of Cisheng Temple include blanched squid, egg oyster omelet, anchovy fried rice, four-ingredient soup, braised pork rice, and original-flavor pork rib soup – each dish is absolutely mouthwatering.
