St. Margaret's Church, Hong Kong

St. Margaret's Church (English: St. Margaret's Church) is a Catholic church in Hong Kong and the first church in the East to be named after Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque (English: St. Margaret Mary Alacoque). It is situated at 2A Robson Road, Happy Valley, Hong Kong Island. Established by the Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions, the foundation stone was laid on February 3, 1923, by Father Peter Reilly, and it was consecrated and opened on January 25, 1925. On January 25, 1949, it was elevated to the status of a parish. The church is now listed as a Grade I historic building.

Structure

Constructed in 1923, St. Margaret's Church was designed by Italian architect G. Conio and features Classical Revival architecture. A long flight of stairs leads up to the church entrance, allowing worshippers to look up toward the church as they approach. The façade includes a rose window, and the porch is supported by four Doric columns. Statues of Saints Peter and Paul stand on either side of the main door. The interior employs an 18th-century French architectural style that combines classical and Gothic elements, featuring columns supporting a round-arched ceiling. The barrel-vaulted ceiling is adorned with bas-relief panels, and the floor plan follows the form of a Roman public basilica, with a semi-circular sanctuary at the far end. A spiral stone staircase leads to the bell tower. The side walls are fitted with numerous stained glass windows, and along the walls are 14 wooden carvings depicting the Passion of Christ through to His Resurrection. In 1990, the church was designated as a Grade II historic building in Hong Kong, and on December 21, 2010, it was confirmed for upgrade to Grade I historic building status.
