Hong Kong Design Hotel Unveils 29th-Floor “Glass-Bottom Pool” – Swimming Feels Like Floating in Midair

On the streets of Wan Chai, Hong Kong, if you’ve ever paid close attention to the view above, you might have spotted something astonishing besides the towering skyscrapers that seem to touch the sky: a swimmer gliding through the waters of a pool nearly 30 stories high, with the transparent bottom letting sunlight stream through, their strokes visible to pedestrians below.

This is the first “Indigo Hotel” from the InterContinental Hotels Group to open in Hong Kong. Its architectural style draws inspiration from the history and culture of the Wan Chai district, and as you walk through the hotel, it’s hard not to feel the unique character of the area at every turn.

Wan Chai is a district where old and new blend seamlessly, with remnants of traditional life interwoven among the vibrant market scenes. Indigo has captured the old-world charm of the area within its design, incorporating strong elements of Chinese decor into modern interiors, accented with bold colors that have caught the eye of many international visitors.

The hotel’s glass façade design is inspired by the golden dragon, with its scales serving as exterior decorations. These reflect sunlight during the day, making the entire building shimmer, while also effectively reducing direct sunlight indoors to save on air conditioning energy and align with environmental goals. Upon entering, guests are greeted by a vibrant lobby and a soaring atrium.

Inside the guest rooms, the Indigo Deluxe Rooms feature floor-to-ceiling windows offering sweeping 90-degree views of the city’s bustling skyline. The room designs also incorporate artworks that blend old and new, reflecting the environment of the Wan Chai district. Among them, the blue human-shaped statue draws inspiration from the story of Lam Cho, a successor of Wong Fei-hung and a master of Hung Gar kung fu; meanwhile, the traditional Chinese tea set beside the sofa also merges classic and contemporary elements.

The hotel boasts a novel design and is highly comfortable to stay in, but the most eye-catching feature is undoubtedly the edgeless glass-bottom pool on the 29th floor. Breaking away from the conventional concept of infinity pools, this pool gives the illusion of having no bottom, allowing swimmers to gaze through the transparent glass at the vibrant nightlife of Wan Chai. At night, the pool is enhanced with lighting effects that create a dazzling glow, reminiscent of a radiant pearl appearing alongside a Chinese dragon.

Reporters experienced the pool firsthand; the day of the visit was overcast, and typically, hotel pools on higher floors are closed during thunderstorms to prevent lightning strikes. Stepping onto the transparent glass, one can clearly see the flow of traffic below, feeling as though standing in the sky. With the gentle ripples of the pool water, it feels like floating in midair, creating a uniquely surreal sensation.
