He described it as: “It’s the most ambiguous district in Hong Kong, a melting pot of all kinds of cultures. Redevelopment projects have been carried out one after another in Wan Chai—the demolition of Lee Tung Street, the reconstruction of the Wan Chai Market, and the emergence of the new Wan Chai. Wan Chai, formerly known as Sai Wan, which means “small bay,” is actually one of the earliest developed areas in Hong Kong. It has long been a major hub for the Chinese community, and with the presence of the British and American troops, its development accelerated rapidly. When night falls, the bar districts along Lockhart Road and Jaffe Road come alive with nightlife. American soldiers stationed here during the Vietnam War often frequented these spots, giving Wan Chai a strong foreign flavor and making it one of Hong Kong’s former red-light districts. After the war ended and warships left the harbor, the red-light district gradually faded, but Wan Chai continued to renovate and rebuild. Today, Wan Chai remains at the forefront of Hong Kong’s progress, a shining pearl atop the crown. Especially since it lies between Central and Western District and Eastern District on Hong Kong Island, with many of the island’s main roads passing through, Wan Chai continues to hold its status as one of Hong Kong’s most bustling and vibrant commercial districts.

The glitzy Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Building and Golden Bauhinia Square stand proudly, but the distinctive grassroots life and strong sense of community unique to Wan Chai have not completely faded in this era of chasing the new and forgetting the old. After visiting towering skyscrapers, wander into the old neighborhoods and you’ll find traditional shops, an old post office built in Western architectural style, and a 1937 Bauhaus building.
