Pushing for East Coast tourism: Mainland China and Hong Kong charter flights to launch in May!

The long-awaited East Coast charter flights are set to officially launch in May. These flights will make it more convenient for travelers from Taiwan, Mainland China, and Hong Kong to visit each other, greatly benefiting bilateral exchanges and expected to effectively boost local tourism and economic development on Taiwan’s eastern coast.

The inbound tourism markets from Mainland China and Hong Kong/Macau to Taiwan continue to grow. Travelers from these regions show strong interest in Taiwan’s local culture and indigenous heritage, as well as a deep fascination with the dramatic coastal and mountain landscapes of Eastern Taiwan. To further enhance the travel experience for visitors from Mainland China and Hong Kong/Macau, the Tourism Bureau continues to focus on developing more in-depth travel products and expanding flight routes. The goal is to guide tourists to explore Taiwan through travel models that include the North, Central, South, and East regions, along with outlying islands, thereby experiencing the full beauty of Taiwan. To this end, in recent years, efforts have been made in coordination with relevant agencies to promote East Coast–Mainland China and Hong Kong/Macau charter flights. This initiative aims to offer new travel itineraries centered around Eastern Taiwan, reducing the transportation costs previously associated with entering Taiwan via western airports and then traveling eastward. It also seeks to increase the diversity and novelty of Taiwan travel options within the Mainland China and Hong Kong/Macau markets.

Currently, it has been confirmed that airlines including Uni Air, TransAsia Airways, and Mandarin Airlines will operate eight charter flights starting May 7. The Tourism Bureau emphasizes that these eight flights are just the beginning. With continued collaboration among industry stakeholders and promotional efforts, the hope is to establish regular charter flights and attract more travelers from Mainland China and Hong Kong/Macau to visit Eastern Taiwan.

Known charter flight routes include Mandarin Airlines’ inaugural Nanjing–Hualien flight on May 7 and Nanjing–Taitung flight on May 14; Uni Air’s inaugural Xiamen–Taitung flight on May 5; and TransAsia Airways’ Hangzhou–Hualien charter on May 14. For Hong Kong/Macau routes, the Tourism Bureau has coordinated with Mandarin Airlines to arrange two round-trip charter flights per week between Hong Kong and Taitung (May 15–18) and between Hong Kong and Hualien (May 21–25).

Travelers from Mainland China and Hong Kong/Macau have long been drawn to the mountain-and-sea scenery and laid-back lifestyle of the East Coast. Currently, the Jiangsu Provincial Tourism Association is actively recruiting 100 travelers in Nanjing to take the Nanjing–Hualien charter flight to Taiwan. The Hong Kong market has also responded enthusiastically to the charter flights. The Tourism Bureau’s Hong Kong office is promoting the initiative extensively through media coverage, advertisements, and promotional efforts on the internet, in shopping malls, and via celebrity endorsements to boost visibility for Eastern Taiwan—the “back garden of Taiwan.”
