Stanley Main Street, Hong Kong

Stanley Main Street is the name given to a street located along the eastern shoreline near Stanley Bay in the southeastern part of Hong Kong Island, as well as the surrounding area known as the “Stanley Market.” The street is packed with holidaymakers.

To the west, Stanley Main Street boasts stunning sea views, while to the east, there is a row of no more than six-story tong lau (Chinese tenement buildings) lined along the roadside. These buildings house bars, Western-style restaurants, and small shops selling souvenirs. The area is a popular spot for tourists, especially the section along the waterfront, which becomes a pedestrian street on holidays. With its numerous bars, it is also known as a “bar street.” In 2006, the Hong Kong government’s Architectural Services Department redeveloped Stanley Main Street, adding a new section of waterfront promenade along Stanley Bay, which was completed in early 2007.

Getting There: 1. From Exit D of Hong Kong Station on the MTR, take Bus 6, 6A, 6X, 66, or 260 from the Central Exchange Square Bus Terminus. 2. From Exit B of Causeway Bay Station on the MTR, cross Hennessy Road, turn right, and walk straight until you reach Tung Lung Street, then take Green Minibus 40. 3. From the Tsim Sha Tsui East Bus Terminus in Kowloon or outside New World Centre on Canton Road, take Bus 973.
