Introduction

Hong Kong Wetland Park was launched in May 2006. Located in the northern part of Tin Shui Wai, New Territories, it includes an indoor “Wetland Interactive World” (i.e., the Visitor Centre) covering 10,000 square metres, as well as a wetland conservation area of over 60 hectares. It is the first park in Asia to feature such facilities. The Visitor Centre has three main exhibition galleries displaying exhibits related to biodiversity, civilisation development, and nature conservation, each ranging from 800 to 1,200 square metres in size. There is also a screening room, gift shop, Wetland Café, Swamp Adventure, and Water Play Area for visitors to enjoy.

The wetland conservation area includes man-made wetlands and restored habitats for waterfowl. The park is home to nearly 190 species of birds, 40 species of dragonflies, and over 200 species of butterflies and moths. Indoor exhibitions showcase common wetland flora and fauna, such as the Malayan gharial, Malayan box turtle, the locally unique Hong Kong paradise fish, and the Hong Kong cascade frog. The juvenile Chinese alligator “Pui Pui,” captured in June 2004 in the Shan Pui River in Yuen Long, was relocated to the park’s “Pui Pui’s Home” in August 2006. Hong Kong Wetland Park is the city’s first major ecotourism facility and has also been awarded the Hong Kong Institute of Architects Annual Architecture Award.

Transportation

1. Take the Light Rail 705 or 706 line from Tin Shui Wai Station on the West Rail Line (KCR), and get off at Wetland Park Station. It’s a 5-minute walk from there.

2. Take Bus 967 from Admiralty (West) Bus Terminus and alight at Chun Wang Court Station, then walk for about 3 minutes. Alternatively, Routes 705, 706, and 761 all stop at Wetland Park Station. You may also take KMB Buses 264M, 265M, 265S, 276A, 276B, or 967 and get off right outside the park.
