Hong Kong's Autumn Foliage: Three Must-Visit Maple Spots

As autumn draws to a close, some of Taiwan’s mountain areas are ablaze with colorful maples and ashes, while others have quietly shed their vibrant leaves after a lively display. When it comes to leaf peeping, people often instinctively think of Japan, Korea, or Canada. But actually, not far from Taiwan, Hong Kong also boasts many great maple-viewing spots, the most famous being Tai Tong in Yuen Long, Tsing Yi Park, Hong Kong Park, and the Mok Kwong Ping Garden at the University of Hong Kong.

● Yuen Long Tai Tong
Yuen Long Tai Tong has become a very popular red leaf destination in Hong Kong in recent years. Every year around November and December, when temperatures drop suddenly, the sweet gum trees along the mountain paths gradually change color. The area alongside the Tai Tong Hill Road in Tai Tong Country Park is especially dense with sweet gum trees, with the highest concentration near the Sweet Gum Tree Grove Pavilion. The cold winter temperatures and shorter daylight hours cause the leaves to lose chlorophyll and turn red and yellow, creating a romantic landscape.

● Tsing Yi Park
If you’d rather avoid the crowds at Yuen Long Tai Tong, head to Tsing Yi Park to enjoy a fairytale-like autumn scene. The trees planted here aren’t maples or sweet gums, but around a dozen dawn redwoods and metasequoias. Though not as numerous as those at Tai Tong, Tsing Yi Park makes up for it with an artificial lake — the soft yellow and orange leaves perfectly complement the water, creating breathtaking scenery that has earned it the nickname “Hong Kong’s Canadian Lake View.”
