In past years, the Dawn Train to Sanxiantai in Taitung always created a huge buying craze. But the destinations for the Dawn Train trips available for purchase starting November 30, 2015, are different — instead of the traditional Taimali route, the new option departs on December 31 and arrives late at night in Alishan to prepare for welcoming the first light of dawn and enjoying the beautiful sunrise over Alishan.

The Dawn Train itinerary is one of the cruise-style train services launched by Taiwan Railways for the autumn and winter seasons. For the New Year’s trip, half of the tickets were sold within just one day of going on sale on November 30. Some travelers also mentioned that the festive countdown atmosphere on the train during previous New Year’s Eves was lively and memorable. The booking schedule for the 2016 New Year’s holiday is also a major concern for both travelers and those returning home. Taiwan Railways announced that ticket sales will begin at midnight on December 17, with tickets available for trains running between December 31, 2015, and January 4, 2016.

Starting from midnight on Friday, December 4, the high-speed rail will begin pre-selling round-trip tickets for the New Year’s travel period. For the special New Year’s 2016 transport period, 399 train services have been designated to offer “Early Bird Discounts,” accounting for 51% of all services during this period. Among these, 20 specified standard-class reserved-seat services are available at a full 65% discount under the Early Bird promotion. Passengers who book their tickets between 5 and 28 days before their travel date may be eligible for early bird discounts of 65%, 80%, or 90% (a list of services with the full 65% discount is provided below; click in for others). Additionally, during the peak travel period, there are also special offers such as the “University Student Discount” (see official website), the “Standard-Class Cardholder Discount,” and the “Business-Class Limited Upgrade.” However, the “New Station Weekday Specified Service Group Trial Program,” “New Three Stations Opening Discount Program,” “Weekday Off-Peak Discount,” group bookings of 25 or more people, and “School Excursion” programs are not applicable during this time.
