Jacob (played by Aaron Paul van Koningsbrugge), a young billionaire known as the ultimate “life success story,” feels indifferent about his existence. After his mother passes away, he becomes intent on dying—but always survives… Eventually, Jacob turns to a “Suicide Design Company” that customizes various methods of death for clients, and opts for a “surprise” accidental death plan with an unpredictable timing.

Before his life comes to an end, he meets Annie (played by Georgina Verbaan), a beautiful woman who has also signed up to die. After spending days together, the two gradually fall in love. Jacob decides to break the contract and spend the rest of his life with Annie, which leads to relentless pursuits by the Suicide Design Company—and thus begins a thrilling, accident-packed escape filled with love….

The film’s concept originated from the Dutch writer Bjarne Reuter’s short story “De Surprise,” which tells the tale of a couple wishing to die and deciding to seek help from a suicide company. But as they spend time together, they fall in love and struggle to back out of their contract. The story’s message is: “Only by facing death can you live life to the fullest—everyone should treat each day as if it were their last.” Michael van Damme said: “This concept inspired me to adapt it into a film using visual storytelling. It was originally meant to be my first movie, but when I was preparing to shoot, the author Bjarne Reuter passed away, delaying the film rights. It wasn’t until a few years ago, when I contacted his daughter—who was also very keen on adapting the story into a film—that this movie finally came to life.” [The Accidental Company], like [Character], is a deeply moving film with a very sincere theme.
