The anti-extradition protests in Hong Kong have intensified. In addition to regular weekend demonstrations, activists launched a “three strikes” movement on August 5, aiming to demonstrate their determination to protest and voice demands through strikes, school walkouts, and business shutdowns.

This “Hong Kong three strikes” movement has directly led to the suspension of operations at multiple MTR stations and lines. With many ground staff, flight attendants, and airport crew members on strike at Hong Kong Airport, numerous flights have been grounded—nearly 200 flights have been canceled. As both land and air transport are severely affected, the impact on Hong Kong’s tourism industry and local sightseeing has been significant.

As the Hong Kong government has not yet responded to the “five demands of the anti-extradition movement,” most protesters are unable to accept Chief Executive Carrie Lam’s statement that only the Fugitive Offenders amendment bill is “dead.” They are also increasingly concerned about the subsequent use of violence by the police, the unprovoked attacks by white-clad men in Yuen Long, and other related incidents. Protesters and many residents of Hong Kong are deeply unsettled about the current situation.
