Tribal Suspension Bridge: Have Fun in Wufeng for a Day of Village Strolling!

Hsinchu’s Wufeng Township is located to the west of the Snow Mountain Range, featuring undulating mountain ranges. It is a mountainous township primarily inhabited by the Atayal, Saisiyat, and a small number of Hakka people. Take a weekend and bring your family to explore Wufeng!

From 1983 to 1986, Sanmao lived in this red-brick house, seeking inspiration for her writing and assisting Father Ding Songqing of the Qingquan Catholic Church with translating his works. The remnants of Sanmao’s Dream House still exist today and are now operated as a café by the owner in her memory. This small red-brick house captured Sanmao’s dreams and deepened her love for Qingquan, largely due to the stunning landscape before it. From here, one can overlook the entire beautiful valley of the Xiakelo River. When fog rolls in, the clear waters of Qingquan appear like a scene from a painting.

Qingquan Scenic Area is a renowned destination en route to Dabajian Mountain. Already famous for its hot springs during the Japanese colonial period, it is surrounded by mountains, with the Shangping River flowing through it—offering a serene and elegant atmosphere. Aside from the hot springs, the picturesque suspension bridges are another highlight of Qingquan. There are four suspension bridges within the scenic area, all spanning over 100 meters across the Shangping River. With crystal-clear river water below and lush green mountains in the distance, especially in winter when the scenery is accentuated by sparkling yellow leaves and vibrant poinsettias among the green hills, it's truly beautiful. These are the oldest and best-preserved suspension bridges in Wufeng Township.

Guanwu is located at the border between Hsinchu’s Wufeng Township and Miaoli’s Tai’an Township. The area is often enveloped in sea of clouds and mist, earning it the nickname “Home of Clouds.” Along the way, you’ll encounter breathtaking scenery and mesmerizing views, including the ever-shifting sea of clouds that appear both near and far, showcasing the grandeur of nature. At an elevation of about 1,800 meters, Guanwu Recreation Area is the best starting point and essential stop for viewing Dabajian Mountain. It features several forest trails and is home to many unique or endangered species of flora and fauna found only in Taiwan worldwide.

The Chang Hsueh-liang Former Residence preserves the interior decor of the residence where the "Young Marshal" was under house arrest, along with historical photographs, offering a glimpse into his 13 years in Wufeng’s Qingquan. The original residence was located north of Qingquan Bridge but was destroyed by Typhoon Gloria in 1963. Due to the site being in a landslide-sensitive area, it cannot be rebuilt on the original spot. Currently, the original location has been turned into a heritage park, while the new site has been reconstructed based on old photos of the residence.
