Qianniu Lake Water Conservancy Scenic Area is located in Shawan County on the northern edge of the Junggar Basin in Xinjiang, built around Qianniu Lake Reservoir. The scenic area is a reservoir-type water conservancy attraction, covering a water surface of over 2,500 acres. Situated at the heart of Xinjiang’s Tianshan North Slope Economic Belt, the area boasts significant regional advantages and great development potential. Located in the alluvial plain overflow zone of the Manas River basin, the area features over 3,000 springs—ranging from large ones spanning seventy to eighty square meters to tiny ones no bigger than pinholes—all interconnected with continuous flowing water, creating a uniquely charming landscape. The surrounding region is home to the largest natural wetland in northern Xinjiang, spanning over 20,000 acres, with vast reed beds, crisscrossing waterways, and habitats for a diverse array of rare birds and animals, reflecting strong biodiversity. The area is inhabited by multiple ethnic groups including Han, Kazakh, Hui, and Uyghur peoples, offering rich folk customs. After years of development and construction, the scenic area has seen increasingly complete infrastructure and service facilities, demonstrating promising growth prospects.

Qianniu Lake falls under the jurisdiction of Shanghedi Township, approximately 26 kilometers south of the county seat. Named for its numerous springs, the lake is a typical natural scenic area characterized by wetland meadows and marshes.

In the reed marshes by Qianniu Lake, mushrooms sprout like white clouds after rain, earning the lake the nickname “Mushroom Lake.” Beyond this unique mushroom spectacle, the area is also a labyrinth of reeds, a world of springs, a paradise for aquatic life, and a kingdom for birds. Across the endless reed fields lie over 3,000 springs of various sizes, all interconnected with streams linking every corner. Amidst the vast waters, reeds form dense thickets, waterways twist through serene paths, and a variety of lush aquatic plants thrive vibrantly. The lake surface shimmers with clear waters, misty waves, scattered islands, and winding capes and bays. Native fish such as carp, crucian carp, and silver carp swim freely beneath the surface, while above, wild ducks paddle and call out, egrets stretch their wings, swans glide gracefully, herons quietly forage, cormorants dive and surface, and brightly colored waterfowl occasionally take flight in startled flocks, filling the air with their chorus—a truly spectacular sight.

On the northern shore of Qianniu Lake lies a well-preserved, primitive secondary forest of over a thousand acres, where birch, shrub willow, oleaster, and red willow thrive vibrantly. Foxes, hares, roe deer, warblers, and eagles live here in a natural state of survival of the fittest.

Near the Qianniu Lake scenic area, there are numerous fish ponds scattered across the landscape, with aquaculture covering an area of 1,000 acres. The area is abundant in fish, crabs, shrimp, and soft-shelled turtles, particularly known for its crabs and shrimp.
