The North Coast Kite Festival: A Colorful Spectacle in the Sky and on the Ground

The “2015 New Taipei City North Coast International Kite Festival” will be held on September 26 and 27 at Shimen’s Baishawan Beach. This year, five special kite zones have been introduced, including “DIY Colorful Windmill Fun,” “Stamp Challenge Games: Hometown of the Wind – Shimen Adventure,” “International Kite Performance Show,” “Kite Craft Exhibition,” and “Fortune-Turning Wind Art.” Everyone is invited to come and fly kites together!

This year, in addition to inviting domestic and international kite teams to gather at Baishawan for technical competitions and performances, the opening day of the event will also feature an impressive opening show with stunt kites on land and surf kites at sea, setting the stage for this year’s activities. Furthermore, in addition to teams from France, Japan, Malaysia, and Indonesia, the festival has also invited two teams for the first time — led by Belgium’s Alain Micquiaux and Germany’s Volker — whose works will make their debut against the blue skies of New Taipei City’s North Coast. Alain Micquiaux from Belgium is already well-known across Europe for his kites that are both realistic and dreamlike, presenting an incredible floating beauty under the seaside sunset.

In addition, this year the Shimen District Office has planned community workshops themed around “wind,” creating lessons and productions involving windmills, wind chimes, and kites. The creative results will also be displayed on the first floor of the Baishawan Visitor Center during this year’s theme event. On-site activities include a windmill DIY kids’ corner, wind art parent-child painting fun, Shimen natural ecology quiz challenges, and exciting performances by university clubs, allowing everyone to experience a variety of kite-related activities and cultures!
