Minfeng, formerly known as Niya, was the site of the Jiaojue Kingdom, one of the Thirty-Six Kingdoms of the Western Regions.

The county town is very small, with only two main streets shaped like the letter [T]. Each street is no longer than three or four hundred meters.

At the center of the town stands a Quotations Tower built during the Cultural Revolution, inscribed with phrases such as [Self-reliance and hard struggle] and other quotations from Chairman Mao, evoking a sense of the old days.

“Chairman Mao's Quotations Tower” was first built in 1964. The tower has four sides, each engraved with profound statements by Chairman Mao on socialism and the people’s ideology, inscribed in both Chinese and Russian.

The tower suffered partial damage during the Cultural Revolution. It was restored in the mid-to-late 1970s. In 2002, when Minfeng County was undergoing expansion, there was widespread public consultation on whether to demolish the tower. The residents of this remote small county unanimously agreed that it should not be torn down and had it renovated to a new condition.

Nationwide, four “Chairman Mao's Quotations Towers” were once built. Two were destroyed during the Cultural Revolution, and another in Yunnan was demolished in the 1990s. Today, only the one in Minfeng County has been well preserved. The “Chairman Mao's Quotations Tower” has now become a landmark building of Minfeng County.
