Tea seed oil, known as the “Oriental Olive Oil,” has become a popular cooking oil among residents in Europe and America. It is reported that the county produces 3,000 tons of tea seed oil annually, with an output value of 150 million yuan and annual export earnings of 2.6 million US dollars. Yongfeng tea seed oil products have entered well-known supermarkets such as Walmart and Metro, becoming one of the best-selling and hottest products around the Spring Festival.

In the past, the leftover tea seed dregs from rural oil pressing in Yongfeng County were all burned as firewood by farmers for cooking, resulting in the waste of tens of thousands of tons of dregs every year. To develop and utilize this resource, Yongfeng County introduced technology and equipment from other regions and invested in establishing an oil company. Every winter and spring, the company purchases tea seed dregs from villages and households, refines them into high-quality camellia oil, and processes the remaining cake meal into a series of products such as tea saponin and oilseed meal. Currently, the county’s “Green Sea” brand tea seed oil has obtained origin certification from the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine and the right to use the green food label. Its production, sales, exports, and market share rank among the top in China’s specialty woody edible oil sector. Green Sea Company has also been recognized as a trusted consumer product enterprise in China, one of the top 100 agricultural industrialization brand enterprises in the province, and a national-level leading enterprise in agricultural industrialization. It has not only become an important export processing base for tea seed oil, tea saponin, and oilseed meal in China, but also exports its products to the United States, Japan, Southeast Asia, and other regions and countries.

Tea seed oil processing has driven the cultivation of oil-tea camellia. In early spring, farmers in Yongfeng County, Jiangxi Province, are busy digging holes and planting high-yield oil-tea camellia seedlings on the oil-tea hills. Village oil mills are bustling with activity as people work diligently to crush, steam, press, and extract oil from the seeds, filling the air with the fragrant aroma of tea seed oil. Food processing companies such as Yongshufu, Guixiangpo, and Shexiangsao are using scientific techniques to develop a range of camellia oil-based food products, showing strong momentum in both production and sales.
