The Long March Memorial Pavilion on Liupan Mountain

The Long March Memorial Pavilion on Liupan Mountain is a classic site of red tourism.

Liupan Mountain is not only a richly resourced forest base with well-preserved vegetation and beautiful scenery, but also a monument in the history of the Chinese revolution.

In October 1935, the First Front Red Army led by Mao Zedong made a long trek over Liupan Mountain, opening the final passage to the revolutionary base in northern Shaanxi. Mao climbed atop Liupan Mountain, facing the wind and taking in the view, filled with unyielding spirit. Reflecting on the arduous journey of the Red Army and envisioning the future of the revolution, he spontaneously composed the majestic poem “Qingpingyue · Liupan Mountain,” which brought international fame to Liupan Mountain. In September 1961, at the request of the people of Ningxia, Mao inscribed a long scroll as a gift to inspire the building of Ningxia with the spirit of “He who has never been to the Great Wall is not a true hero.”

Today, a stone tablet engraved with Mao’s full handwritten poem still stands in Heshangpu at the foot of Liupan Mountain, to enlighten future generations and inspire those who come after. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the victory of the Long March, the “Long March Memorial Pavilion on Liupan Mountain” was built in 1985 atop the mountain, where the Red Army once passed. It bears an inscription by [name missing].

Lofty and majestic, the Long March Memorial Pavilion stands at the summit of Liupan Mountain. It has become a permanent base for patriotic and revolutionary tradition education. Today, the completion of the Northwest First Tunnel has turned Liupan Mountain, once described as “its peaks towering three thousand zhang above Huashan, and its dangers surpassing the hundredfold fortifications of Qin Pass,” into a smooth thoroughfare, adding new meaning to tourism.
