As the annual Dragon Boat Festival approaches, due to rising costs of raw materials and ingredients, traditional zongzi (sticky rice dumplings) have seen price increases. However, Beijing Station Fashion Plaza’s carefully selected zongzi shops are holding the line on prices. Additionally, this year Beijing Station is exclusively introducing for the first time the over 60-year-old Nanmen Market time-honored shop “Shanghai Hexing Pastry Shop,” famous for authentic Shanghai flavors. These include Huzhou zongzi, Ningbo rice cakes, pine cakes, tangyuan (sweet rice balls), yuanbao (sweet glutinous rice balls), Jinhua ham... all long-time customer favorites. The second-generation owner continues his father’s tradition of handcrafted production, soaking the PAI LUO rice overnight, grinding it into a paste, then steaming it before pounding it vigorously with a wooden pestle until the rice dough is slightly springy, and then kneading it repeatedly by hand to achieve a chewy, springy texture. The most popular zongzi are the signature Fresh Meat Zongzi (50 yuan each), Jinhua Ham Zongzi (45 yuan each), as well as the health-focused Job’s Tears and Red Bean Paste Zongzi (50 yuan each), all emphasizing great taste while also being healthy.
