Stone Chi Dragon Head

Stone Chi Dragon Head, measuring 64 cm in length, 23 cm in width, and 25 cm in height, was unearthed in 1974 from Tomb No. 6 of the Western Xia Tombs in Yinchuan, Ningxia. It is now housed in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region Museum.

Made of red sandstone, the entire piece is rectangular in shape and divided into front and rear sections: the front features a Chi dragon head, with spiral patterns used to depict the curled shape of its upper lip. The dragon’s mouth holds a pearl, its brow bones are prominent, its eyes are round and wide open, and its neck is encircled by a ring of mane. Its two horns are carved in relief, giving it a fierce expression and an extraordinary presence; the rear section is a wedge-shaped tenon that can be embedded into architecture.
