The Ruins of Kaicheng

The Ruins of Kaicheng are a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

The Ruins of Kaicheng are located in Kaicheng Township, Guyuan County, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, on the eastern edge of the Liupan Mountains at the watershed between the Qingshui River and the Jing, Ru, and Hulu Rivers. They were the residence of the Anxi King’s chief minister during the Yuan Dynasty in the Liupan Mountain region. The site covers an area of 2.86 square kilometers. The main relics date back to the Yuan Dynasty. On July 6, 1992, the former People's Government of Guyuan County designated this site as a county-level key cultural relics protection unit. There are six key protected areas in total. The discovery of a large number of Yuan Dynasty architectural ornaments featuring dragons and yellow as dominant motifs—such as glazed dragon-patterned roof tiles, drip tiles with gold-traced and silver-inlaid designs—as well as the recent discovery of a temple site built specifically for the worship of Genghis Khan, provide historical evidence for uncovering the mystery of Genghis Khan’s death.

On June 25, 2001, the State Council listed it as part of the fifth batch of National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units under State Council Document No. [2001] 25.
