Tongzhou Museum
Established in 1992, Tongzhou Museum is located in the center of Tongzhou District, on the south side of Xinhua Street. The museum is housed in a well-preserved Qing Dynasty-style two-courtyard quadrangle complex, covering a construction area of 936 square meters. It features typical Beijing architectural style with distinctive local characteristics. The north gate faces a flight of stone steps flanked by white marble railings, with carved dragons on the tops of the balusters and pierced carvings of vases on the railing panels. The courtyard is adorned with painted woodwork and traditional murals, exuding an antique charm. Among them, the painted scroll depicting the Eight Scenic Spots of Tongzhou is particularly vibrant and eye-catching.
In the center of the courtyard stands a circular flower stand made of blue sandstone, encircled by carved images of a single dragon, and planted with an ancient lilac tree. When in bloom, the fragrance is delightful and the ambiance serene. The museum’s permanent exhibition “Ancient Tongzhou” adopts a historical materialist perspective to showcase carefully selected precious cultural relics unearthed in Tongzhou.
Featuring 164 items, the exhibition introduces the 2,200-year history of Tongzhou since its establishment as a county during the Western Han Dynasty, highlights the glorious past of Tongzhou’s canal transport history which began in the Qin and Han Dynasties and flourished in the Yuan, Ming, and Qing Dynasties, and celebrates the spirit of the people of Tongzhou who value civilization and work diligently.
